A few seconds can change everything!!
Let us assume a vehicle is approaching without knowing a wet patch ahead. A pedestrian appears from nowhere and so, the rider reacts instinctively and applies the brakes.
In that moment, it's not about just stopping the vehicle. It's about saving the lives.
This is where the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) becomes a life saviour.
How?
When the rider applies the brakes, the ABS continuously monitors the behaviour of the wheels. If the system detects that a wheel is approaching a lock-up condition, it regulates the brake pressure to help prevent the wheel from locking.
But there is something important for every rider to remember. ABS is an additional safety layer, not a guarantee against accidents.
Why ABS?
Riding a 2W hits different. A motorcycle depends heavily on tyre traction, road conditions and braking balance to stay stable.
Now, imagine another unexpected situation. A vehicle suddenly moves into your path, and you have to brake hard.
What happens then?
An excessive braking force is applied, and the wheel meets a lock-up condition. This can reduce available traction and make it more difficult for the rider to maintain control.
This is where ABS can make a difference.

ABS is particularly valuable in situations such as:

But does ABS actually improve safety in real-world riding?
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), motorcycles equipped with optional ABS had a 22% lower rate of fatal crash involvements compared with the same models without ABS.
So, ABS is not just about meeting a safety requirement. It is about giving the rider an additional layer of control when braking situations become difficult.
Is ABS Mandatory for All Two-Wheelers in India?
The answer is not as simple as saying “ABS is mandatory for every two-wheeler.”
The purpose of regulation is to establish a minimum safety baseline.
But is meeting that baseline the end of the engineering journey?

ABS vs CBS
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) monitors wheel behaviour and regulates brake pressure to help prevent wheel lock during hard braking.
CBS (Combined Braking System) links front and rear braking action to help distribute braking force when the rider applies the brakes.
So, which one is appropriate?
CBS can support coordinated braking, but when it comes to helping prevent wheel lock during hard braking, ABS provides an added level of active safety that OEMs cannot overlook.
The technology needs to match the vehicle and its intended application.
Now, Let’s Look at ABS from a Two-Wheeler OEM’s Perspective
For a rider, ABS may appear to be a simple safety feature.
For an OEM, however, integrating ABS is a much bigger engineering task.
Why Is ABS Integration an Engineering Challenge for OEMs?
ABS implementation is more than simply installing an ABS unit. It needs to operate as part of the complete vehicle.
OEMs need to consider several areas:
Hardware Integration
Wheel-speed sensors, ABS ECU, brake hardware, electrical interfaces and mechanical packaging all need to work together within the vehicle.
Embedded Software
Control algorithms, diagnostics, fault handling, communication and calibration parameters play an important role in ABS operation.
Vehicle Calibration
Tyres, wheel size, vehicle mass, brake configuration, suspension behaviour, road friction and payload can all influence braking behaviour.
Testing & Validation
ABS performance needs to be evaluated across different conditions.
